Amethystos

Amethystos

£280.00Price

Dionysus is the Ancient Grecian god of wine, merriment and pleasure (equivalent to the Roman god Bacchus) - he is often symbolised by grapevines that are the source of the wine.

The myth is told that Dionysus fell in love with a nymph called Amethystos who unfortunately did not return his feelings. Wanting to remain chaste and to escape Dioynysus' pursuit, she appealed to Artemis for her help and was turned into a white crystal stone.
In remorse Dionysus poured wine over the stone turning it a beautiful purple colour and the creation of the stone we now know as 'amethyst'.

Given it's mythical origins the Ancient Greeks believed the stone had magical properties to ward off intoxication - they would wear amethyst in jewellery, hold it in their mouths or drop it into their goblets of wine in the hopes of escaping drunkenness!

We were already huge fans of the Amethyst gem, but this myth really inspired us to create a fun design that highlights not only the beauty of the gemstone but its mythical origins.

The organic, twisting grapevine ring was handcarved from jeweller's wax (by us!), cast into sterling silver and set with a deeply glowing amethyst cabochon before being gold plated to really bring out those rich violet tones.

To us this is a protective talisman of fun and moderation for modern libertines, firmly rooted in ancient culture with accents of Art Nouveau naturalism.
