Amethystos

Amethystos

£280.00Price

Dionysus is the Ancient Grecian God of wine-making, festivity and theatre. Naturally he is often symbolised by grapevines. The myth says that Dionysus fell in love with a nymph called Amethystos, who unfortunately did not rreciprocate his feelings. In order to remain chaste and to escape Dioynysus' pursuit, she appealed to Artemis for her help and was turned into a white crystal stone. In remorse Dionysus poured wine over the stone turning it a beautiful purple colour and the creation of the stone we now know as 'amethyst'. Given it's mythical origins the Ancient Greeks believed the stone had magical properties to ward off intoxication - they would wear amethyst in jewellery, hold it in their mouths or drop it into their goblets of wine in the hopes of escaping drunkenness! We were already huge fans of the Amethyst gem, but this myth really inspired us to create a fun design that highlights not only the beauty of the gemstone, but its mythical origins. To us this is a protective talisman of fun and moderation for modern libertines, firmly rooted in ancient culture with accents of Art Nouveau naturalism.
